Atomizer – The heating device that vaporises the e-liquid.
Base – A liquid that forms the basis of the E-liquid. Either Propylene Glycol (PG) or Vegetable Glycerin (VG) or a mix of the two. This is the liquid that produces the visible vapour and carries the flavouring and nicotine. Both liquids are inert and regularly used in cosmetics, foods and other products.
Battery – The power source for the atomizer.
Cartomizer – A cartridge containing an atomizer and a filler material that is saturated with e-liquid.
Coil – The element inside the atomizer that passes current and heats up.
Drip Tip – A mouth piece that can be attached to various cartomizers / clearomizers. Allows easy ‘dripping’.
Dripping – dripping e-liquid directly into the atomizer.
Electronic Cigarette (E-Cigarette, E-Cig, Personal Vaporizer, PV) – the system used to convert e-liquid into vapour for inhalation. Consists or a power source, atomizer and tank system.
E-Liquid (Juice) – E-Liquid is vaporized by the heating element to produce vapor which can is then inhaled to create the sensation of smoking. E-Liquid contains 3 main components. A base of either Propylene Glycol or Vegetable Glycerine nicotine, and flavourings.
Filler Material – A material that soaks up e-liquid and feeds it to a atomizer.
Flooding – when too much e-liquid gets inside the atomizer producing a “gurgling” sound.
Kanthal – A type of resistance wire used in atomizers.
Mod – Originally , a mod was a device created by an e-cig enthusiasts looking for a better device than those mass produced. They wanted superior performance in battery life and vapor production as well as build quality. The term “mod” is used loosely these days and sometimes not correctly. Mod can also be used to describe a modification made to an electronic cigarette or device to improve it’s performance.
Nichrome – A type of resistance wire used in atomizers.
Passthrough – A battery that can be charged while still being used.
Personal Vaporizer (PV) – Another name for an electronic cigarette.
Propylene Glycol (PG) – Propylene Glycol is used as a base in e-liquids. Propylene glycol is approved for use in cosmetics, toiletries, food colourings, cake mixes, salad dressings, soft drinks and more. It’s also used in the smoke/fog machines in theatres and nightclubs. Propylene glycol has been used in asthma inhalers since the 1950′s.
RBA – A rebuildable atomizer. These atomizers allow you to replace or repair the wick and coil system inside of them.
Resistance – Atomizers and cartomizers all have a resistance rating in Ohms. The easiest way to think of this is that the lower the resistance rating, the “hotter” the heating element will get with less power. This is why people will use Low Resistance (LR) atomizers of cartomizers on lower powered devices such as the EGO. It is important to understand that voltage can be supplied to what resistance attys/cartos so that you do not burn them out.
Resistance Wire – What the heating coil is made of. Two types are generally used, Kanthal and Nichrome.
Stacking – Stacking is the act of using two batteries in series instead of just one.
Steeping – Leaving your e-liquid to ‘mature’. The flavour of e-liquid can change significantly if e-liquid is left to steep for some time.
Tank – The system that holds the juice in some sort of ‘tank’ style.
Throat Hit – Throat Hit is the feeling on in the back of the throat when inhaling vapor. The e-liquid’s nicotine level, flavorings used, VG/PG ratio and the voltage used all factor into the amount of throat hit.
Vapeing – The term used for using an electronic cigarette. Because it is vapour produced and not smoke we refer to the process as ‘vapeing’.
Variable Voltage (VV) Device – A device that will allow you to adjust the voltage to the atomizer. A normal range is between 3V to 6V.
Variable Wattage or Power Device – A device that will allow you to adjust the wattage / power to the atomizer.
Vegetable Glycerin (VG) – Vegetable Glycerin is a thicker liquid used as an alternative or in addition to Propylene Glycol in e-liquids.
Wick – A piece of material which soaks up liquid and feeds it into the atomizer.
